An ’embarrassed’ Rod Churchill has apologised for calling Rabbitohs superstar Latrell Mitchell a ‘cancer’ – as the embattled fullback divides fans with a social media post.
The son of Souths’ biggest legend, Clive Churchill, sent an apology email to Souths bosses on Monday morning after describing Mitchell as a ‘myth’, ‘overrated’ and an ’embarrassment’ to the club.
‘I’m embarrassed that I’ve tarnished my dad’s reputation,’ Churchill told News Corp.
‘I can’t take things back that I’ve said but on reflection, I regret all my comments.
‘My reaction was out of frustration and passion for the Rabbitohs.
Rod Churchill has issued an apology for his scathing criticism of Latrell Mitchell
Souths players reportedly vowed to snub the man-of-the-match award – presented by Churchill – should they win the Grand Final
‘I went overboard and I’m deeply sorry.’
Churchill added that he would also like to apologise in person for his scathing attack on Mitchell, if given the chance.
‘I have apologised to the club, Latrell and all the players,’ he said.
‘One day I’d like to reach out to Latrell and apologise personally face to face.’
The apology comes after the astonishing outburst prompted a wave of support for Mitchell, both from within the club and the NRL.
‘Our club has always had the utmost respect for the Churchill family and Clive’s enormous contribution to the Rabbitohs,’ Rabbitohs chief executive Blake Solly said.
‘But on these comments I completely disagree with Rod. Latrell’s passion and commitment to the club is also unquestionable.’
Rabbitohs players also reportedly vowed to snub the man-of-the-match Clive Churchill award -presented by the Bunnies icon’s son – should they win a grand final.
Meanwhile, Mitchell has made a post to social media that has divided footy fans.
The superstar fullback, who is currently serving a one-match suspension, is attending a bull riding rodeo in the remote community of Brewarrina after Souths had the bye last round.
Last week he was at the centre of a scandal as Sam Burgess parted ways with the team after reportedly clashing with coach Jason Demetriou about what the club legend saw as special treatment given to Mitchell and fellow star Cody Walker.
On Sunday night he posted a photo to Instagram from the rural location alongside the comment: ‘Can’t hear the noise from up here’.

While some followers thought it was good for Mitchell to be taking a break and escaping the media storm, others thought he should be on deck supporting the Bunnies for their upcoming do-or-die grudge match against the Roosters.
‘For every hater there are 20 real fans Trell! Do not let this circus get the better of you! You are brilliant, you are strong and you are loved!’ wrote one supporter.
‘I love your heritage, but you are on over 1 Million per season to play football and your taking up a chunk of the salary cap in the meantime. If you don’t want to cop the feedback, then maybe retire up to there full time,’ posted one fan.
‘Yep there it is again. All the south’s boys training hard while big Latrell is on holidays at his farm. Doesn’t seem to show any love for our fans or club,’ replied another.
‘Nice one Trelly but come back down here for your fans and play some footy like your paid great money to do,’ a third posted.
