Let’s hear a round of a-paws for these dog names!
Dog-walking company Rover released its 11th annual Top Pet Names Report, revealing the top dog names of 2023 were largely inspired by pop culture.
After 10 straight years, Max is no longer the most common male dog name. The name Charlie came in first, knocking Max into the No. 2 spot.
The top 10 male dog names in the US for 2023 were, in order: Charlie, Max, Cooper, Milo, Buddy, Teddy, Rocky, Bear, Leo and Duke.
For female dogs, the Top 10 were: Luna, Bella, Daisy, Lucy, Lily, Lola, Zoe, Sadie, Stella and Bailey.
Aside from the Top 10, there are plenty of specific trends that are making the ulti-mutt dog names.
’90s names
You oughta know the ’90s and early 2000s are sneaking back into 2023 — Alanis, as in Morissette, is up 547%.
Ginger Spice is trending up 47% and Spice Girl is a new addition to the list this year as dog owners try to spice up their pet’s life.
Celeb favorites of the pup-arazzi in the ’90s also had their moment, with 1995’s Sexiest Man Alive Brad Pitt trending up 47%, as well as It girls Drew Barrymore (297%), Halle Berry (97%) and Winona (19%) — as in Ryder. The names Chad Michael Murray and Freddie Prinze were also on the list for the first time.
With this year marking 50 years of hip-hop, it’s no surprise that Tupac, Big Boi, Dre, Snoop, Missy, Biggie and Pepa all made the list of top dog names.
And the *NSYNC vs. Backstreet Boys battle made its way into dog names. Trends for *NSYNC names were Chris (23%), Joey (3%), Justin (-12%), Lance (-18%) and JC (-42%), while Backstreet Boys trends included Kevin (4%), AJ (-6%), Howie (-6%), Nick (-13%) and Brian (-14%).
Honorable mentions go to Leonardo Dogcaprio, Dave Growl and Linkin Bark.
Celebrity dog names
Celebrity dogs are also on the rise, notably with Pedro Pawscal, inspired by “the Internet’s daddy,” being added to the list for the first time.
A-list break-ups also affected dog name trends, with Lady Sansa, inspired by Sophie Turner’s “Game of Thrones” character, up 31%, while Joe is trending down 15%. As for everyone’s favorite boyfriend, Pete Davidson’s BDE has helped the dog name Pete trend up 4%.
Dynamic duo Snoop Dogg and Martha Stewart also inspired pet owners — Snoop is trending up 12% and Martha is up 16%. There are plenty of names inspired by Snoop, including Snoop-Dog, Snoopdog, Snoopdogg, Snoop D.O.G.G., Snoop Dizzle, Snoop Doggie Dog, Snoop Doggy Dog, and even Snoop Hoggy Hog.
There are even royal influences from across the pond. Markle is trending up 497%, while Jubilee is down -15%.
TV-inspired names
Netflix series “Wednesday” was a huge inspiration for pet names this year. Wednesday Addams is trending up 297% for dog names, and just Wednesday — ranked #2 trending nationally — is up 92%.
“And Just Like That” obviously had some influence over names as well: Che is up 32%, Charlotte is up 6%, Carrie is up 2% and Nya is up 1% — but Miranda is down -30%, as well as Aiden (-28%) and Big (-16%).
Names were also inspired by “The Bear,” such as the Bear and Carmy, as well as “Succession” with the women of the show, Gerri and Shiv, inspiring the most names — as well as cousin Greg, of course.
Rover added that they are “happy to report that there are no dogs named Waystar.”
“RuPaul’s Drag Race”-inspired names can’t be excluded, with Monet up 79% this year and Slay up 31%.
And it turns out Kourtney Kardashian isn’t the least interesting in everything. Dog name Kourtney is up 122% and Barker, after Travis Barker, is up 52%.
Vanderpump Rules also had an impact, with the dog name Sandoval up 197% this year — though there have yet to be any dogs named Scandoval.
Blockbuster names
Hi Barbie! Sit Barbie!
Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” inspired many dog names this year: Ken is trending up 79%, Barb is up 12%, and Greta, Barbie and Allan all made the list as well.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe kept up its popularity, too, with the trending pet names including Deadpool, Zemo, Mystique, Colter, Castle, Rooster and Ultra.
Musical dog names
Dogs are in their Swiftie era. Swiftie is a new addition to the list this year and Swifty is trending up 37%.
Names inspired by Taylor Swift’s music are also on the rise, such as Cardigan (31%), August (9%), Betty (8%), Karma (7%) and Midnight (6%).
Hairy Styles is new to the list this year, and Blue Ivy is becoming a star both on and offstage, trending up 16% for dog names.
Food & Drink-inspired names
In 2023, Green Bean was the most popular food-inspired dog name at 217%, followed by Cheerios (198%), S’more (157%), Parsley (89%), Ice Cream (83%) and Baguette (79%).
Charcuterie boards took over foodie trends this year, and dog names were not spared. The name Stilton is up 198%, followed by Quince (131%), Fig (17%), Prosciutto (14%) and Brie (2%).
Some paw-ty animals even named their doggos after their favorite beverage, with Beer as a name up 330% this year, followed by Chardonnay, Fizz, Gimlet, Mojito, Pinot, Espresso, Whiskey, Champagne and Chai.
Beverage honorable mentions include White Claw, up 298% this year, Red Bull, up 48%, and Poppi, up 36%.
Sports names
Play ball! To sports fans (and Swifties) it should come as no surprise that Kelce is the 1 top-trending dog name in America (up 135%).
The US Women’s National Team might not have won the World Cup this year, but they definitely won the hearts of dog owners. Pups named Dunn (147%), Megan (33%), Lindsey (4%), Crystal (8%), Alyssa (7%), Trinity (4%), Sophia (3%) and Julie (2%) are all trending up.
Sports-inspired names this year also include Celtic (364%), Trae (222%), Nikola (147%), Mariner (131%), Eagle (114%), Lamb (109%) and Fields (97%).
